Guys, I have several 300 gig drives that are in external enclosures but the damn things are noisy as hell and they NEVER power down.Well, I got me an external Seagate 750 and it's sweet. Not only is it more quiet, it powers down so I leave it on all the time and it's nice and quiet.Well, I'd like to have more than 750 so I was wondering if I can find some kind of external enclosure that will/is:USB 2.0 and preferrably FIreware connectableThat will allow me to set the drives to power down after a set timeThat will allow me to stripe the drives (raid o?) so it's ONE big unit, OR, so that I can access them as different drive letters. I don't need redundant data storage. Also, if it comes with removable trays it would be cool but don't have to be.If it's made so it can fit inside a COMPUTER case/tower that would be cool but not required. Please post links if you have something specific in mind.I just talked to Seagate and they said that the ENCLOSURE has to do the powering down, it's not their drive. Well, their drive DOES it but it's ultimately the enclosure that does it.ThanksGeorge. Georgiwrote:That will allow me to set the drives to power down after a set timeI think only FireWire connection can let you do that, other than that, SATA or USB do not have this functionality. I could be wrong, but I know SATA does not have power channel. That will allow me to stripe the drives (raid o?) so it's ONE bigunit, OR, so that I can access them as different drive letters. Idon't need redundant data storage. If you just want JBOD, you can get it with very cheap price.

If you need hardware RAID, that's different story. Are you using windows? You can use a big JBOD drive and strip them together under windows disk manager. Convert them to dynamic disks and create strip raid.I just talked to Seagate and they said that the ENCLOSURE has to dothe powering down, it's not their drive. Well, their drive DOES itbut it's ultimately the enclosure that does it.that's true.

It's all based on the chipset that is equipped in the Enclosure. Not thing to do with their drive.

I have an Infrant ReadyNAS NV+ which will do what you want, although its a NAS rather than a USB/Firewire box. It supports spinning down the drives when not in use. I initially set them up that way but ultimately abandoned it because it introduces a lag everytime you go to access anything on the drives.

And it also introduces a risk of corruption of the drives are matched well since in order to stripe something all the drives need to be locked and loaded. After some research regarding durability and such I opted to leave them on. The box is very quiet with four drives in it, and I went with enterprise grade drives. Drives designed with a very high MTBF and intended to be run all the time heavily in data centers.-Regards, Mike - Lot's of Canon StuffPhotographer in the Northeast?

I looked at this unit a few days ago (and it might have been you) when someone posted that he had this unit in reply to a question. The price of course struck me as a bit high but then, you get what you pay for. I have no problem with the price as long as it does what I want. Here's my question though.

Because I suck at written instructions, would it be feasible for me to call you and ask you a few questions about it before I do something? I want to make sure it's what I want. Also, I found it on newegg and found a few reviews/comments about it and a few of these things have got me worried.George.
